In commemoration of World Environment Day on June 5, 2025, Nilgiri Biosphere Nature Park (NBNP) organized a Tree Distribution Initiative and an Environmental Awareness Program at the Government Tribal School in Anaikatti, Coimbatore. The event aimed to promote environmental stewardship among students and the local community. A total of 200 native saplings were distributed to students to encourage tree planting and biodiversity conservation.
Environmental Awareness Session
  • The NBNP team delivered an insightful talk on the importance of World Environment Day, focusing on tree conservation and environmental responsibility.
  • An interactive session on the “Wise Use of Plastic” was conducted, particularly engaging camping students from Sishya School, Hosur, emphasizing sustainable habits and plastic reduction strategies.

The Ecological Power of Elephants: Nature’s Forest Architects
On World Elephant Day, let’s celebrate the incredible role these majestic giants play in shaping and sustaining their habitats.

    1. A Giant’s Daily Diet: Elephants consume an impressive 200-250 kg of food and drink 100-150 liters of water daily. This massive intake helps them maintain their large size and energy levels.
    2. Nature’s Seed Dispersers: Among the food they consume, around 10% consists of seeds. This means that for every 250 kg of food, elephants handle approximately 25 kg of seeds and sticks.
    3. Forest Regeneration through Dung: Elephant dung is a potent agent for forest regeneration. Each day, their dung contains roughly 10 kg of seeds and sticks, which are distributed throughout their habitat.
    4. Planting Powerhouse: An elephant can disperse seeds from 300-500 plants each day. This continuous process helps in planting and nurturing thousands of trees.
    5. Annual Forest Growth: Over the course of a month, an elephant can contribute to planting around 3,000 trees. In a year, this translates to about 36,500 trees, showcasing their crucial role in forest creation and maintenance.

Elephants are not just magnificent creatures; they are vital to the health and sustainability of their ecosystems. Their activities help create and sustain forests, supporting countless other species. On World Elephant Day, let’s acknowledge and protect these incredible architects of the wild.

    World Rainforest Day
World Rainforest Day, celebrated annually on June 22, is a global event dedicated to raising awareness about the vital role rainforests play in sustaining life on Earth and the urgent need to protect and preserve them. Established in 2017 by Rainforest Partnership, the day aims to unite individuals, organizations, and governments in taking action to prevent the destruction of these critical ecosystems.

Rainforests are often referred to as the "lungs of the Earth" because they produce about 20% of the world's oxygen. They are home to an estimated 50% of the planet's plant and animal species, many of which are not found anywhere else. These biodiverse ecosystems also play a crucial role in regulating the global climate by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen. Moreover, rainforests are a source of valuable resources, including medicinal plants, and they support the livelihoods of millions of indigenous and local communities.
    Global Wind Day
Global Wind Day, celebrated annually on June 15, is an international event dedicated to discovering wind energy, its power, and the possibilities it holds to reshape our energy systems and decarbonize our economies. The event is a coordinated effort by WindEurope and the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) to raise awareness about the benefits of wind energy and to promote its sustainable use.

Wind energy is one of the fastest-growing sources of renewable energy in the world. It harnesses the power of the wind to generate electricity, providing a clean, sustainable, and inexhaustible source of energy. Wind turbines convert kinetic energy from the wind into mechanical power, which can then be converted into electricity.
